The printhead is a precise, valuable, and delicate component of a barcode printer. Like parts of an automobile, it is a consumable item that will eventually wear out; however, consistent maintenance can help extend its service life.

Preventive Maintenance
To ensure optimal performance, the printhead should be cleaned every time a roll of ribbon or a roll of thermal paper is finished. When cleaning, remove items such as rings or other hard objects that could scratch the printhead. Also, take care to avoid contact with grounded metal strips or objects that may carry static electricity, as these can damage the printhead.

You may use a cotton swab dampened with 70% alcohol for cleaning. First, turn off the printer and open the printhead assembly. Use a soft cloth to gently wipe the mechanical components, or use a gentle stream of air to remove loose dust. Never use hard metal tools or abrasive implements (such as screwdrivers) to scrape contaminants off the printhead. Using an alcohol-dampened cotton swab, wipe the printhead in a single, continuous motion from one end to the other-do not scrub back and forth. Rotate the platen roller while wiping it clean. Discard the cotton swab once it becomes soiled.

Factors Leading to Premature Printhead Failure
Abrasion-The continuous movement of labels or ribbons across the printhead wears away the protective ceramic coating. This exposes the printhead elements (dots), eventually leading to permanent damage.
